Dazzle Ships - a blog post for Remembrance Sunday
09 November 2014
Opposite my studio is berthed the HMS President, an original war ship from the first world war. (I see it every day and sometimes draw it). I really like it.
Over the summer it was wonderful to see it being painted with amazing geometric designs. Artist Tobias Rehberger gave the ship a makeover in celebration of Dazzle geometric designs and shapes which were used on over 2000 warships in the 1st world war to mislead the enemy and make it difficult for them to hit the right target on. (Apparently Picasso believed that the Cubists had invented this technique). Amazing to think these designs were so old though they look so modern. Here's some pictures of the HMS President now (also being painted from a small boat) and also some of the original Dazzle ships.
